6/21-Eveline State Recreation Site Trail

It was a gorgeous sunny day to be on the trail with amazing views of the mountains and glaciers.  I had a friend and her son visiting from Anchorage, so it is was nice to have weather that cooperated to add to the experience!  There weren't any other takers, but we saw a few other people on the trail.  This was an easy hike that offered various loops at distances from 1/2 mile -2 miles (roughly).  At this time of year the grass was short enough where you could see all around you, increasing my comfort level while in the Alaska wilderness with kids.  This trail is also known for it's wildflowers, so although the grass wasn't overgrown we didn't see a ton of flowers yet, mainly lupine.  I am sure this will be a whole different experience later in the summer.  We cruised a short loop off the alpine loop twice.  It was an easy walk and the toddlers hiked a lot of the way until they decided to play with rocks.... or bushwhack.  That is when the carriers came in handy. Of course we let them play, but the carriers allowed us to have a bit of steady stride. The toddlers really enjoyed snacking and hanging out at the picnic table that is a short distance from the trailhead. Eveline State Recreation Site is a fantastic place to enjoy a hike and picnic with kids while enjoying the amazing views.

Meet at Eveline State Recreation Site trail at 10:30-We’ll start hiking by 10:45. This is an easy 1-2 mile hike with fantastic glacier views and wildflowers along the way.  I wouldn’t recommend strollers on this trail, but have heard a handful of people say it is a great trail for kids to walk. Bring a snack and we’ll stop at some point.

Directions: Drive 13.8 miles out East End Road McNeil Canyon Elementary, take the left onto Alpine meadow Drive and go .3 miles to the trailhead where there is a parking area.
I also have an extra kelty kid carrier if anyone would like to borrow (message me on FB if interested or post a comment).

  1. So I went back a month later. Turns out we didn't go very far and took a super short cut as we took the toddlers leads. This time we did the glacier loop and there were a lot more flowers. It was soo beautiful and we took the flower guide that the Field's created! Homer is lucky to have that family! They share so much knowledge with the community and teach so many things about the great outdoors and what surrounds us.
